World College Radio Day This Friday!
This Friday, October 4, is an exciting day for radio on college campuses – it’s World College Radio Day! This event is organized by the College Radio Foundation, and aims to raise the profile of college radio stations across the country and encourage increased student participation in the medium of college radio.
Just how important is college radio? Not only does it provide the education for future broadcasters, it has also been the launching platform for many of the world’s favorite musicians and singers. When they were just starting out, college radio gave an audience to acts like Moby, Wyclef Jean, the Cure, the Smiths, OutKast, R.E.M., and so many more. College radio is also responsible for keeping radio relevant to many young people – reminding them of how important a local source of news can be, when online streaming and social media is so prevalent.
Your college radio station can get involved in World College Radio Day for free. Supporting this event is pretty easy – there are some on-air sweepers you can download and air, some graphics you can share on your social media platforms, and other ways to help spread the word. Visit the F.A.Q. page at CollegeRadio.org to learn everything you need to know.
And every year, participating colleges are entered for the Spirit of College Radio Award, so be sure to check that out!
