The Road Back Home: After the 2019 MBA Convention
This year’s convention has come and gone, and it was a wild ride! Our Route 66 theme took us on a journey from the opening session with Mark Scharenbroich’s three principles of connection, through multiple sessions for sales, production, news, and more – and ended on a high note with a pit stop at the Awards Banquet on Saturday night. There were over 330 broadcasters in attendance on Saturday night alone, and many more came and went throughout the weekend.
This year we tried a few new things, such as inviting CSZ St. Louis to offer an applied improv workshop (and do a little improv entertainment on Friday at lunch). Shaking up the agenda with some fun between educational sessions seemed like a great way to celebrate our laid-back summery theme. Many members loved these additions, and we’re thrilled it went over so well.
We had a friendly improv competition at lunch and this year, Team Pictures (TV) took home the golden microphone. We’ll see if Team Soundwaves (Radio) can bring it home next year!
This year was also our first time having so many different sessions during the convention, which allowed us to really branch out and offer topics for everyone. From sales and news to digital and more, the agenda was packed. Some members were learning about time-saving apps from Judd Slivka, while others were getting their storytelling technique critiqued, and still others were diving into the world of production copywriting.
The Awards Banquet on Saturday night was a great way to celebrate some of the best broadcasting in the state from the previous year. We were honored to be able to induct three broadcasters into the Hall of Fame, as well as to present over 100 awards for radio and TV. And we like to think that everyone had a pretty good time – check out these smiling faces!
And if you missed it, take a look at the Ned Reynolds’ “Big Heads” that some of our KY3 attendees used to cheer on the legend during his Hall of Fame induction:
We loved these!

Now that we have made the drive back home, we are already getting our gears turning with thoughts for next year. We love seeing your enthusiasm at the convention every year, and can’t wait to dive in to next year’s planning – after we catch up on a little sleep!
Thank you all very much for making the trip to Branson and Tuning In to New Connections with us this year!
